FEATURE: INTERNATIONAL RIDERS UP LEVEL OF CUB PRIX RACING 4 July 2012
Even as the 2012 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship heads into its routine Syawal and Ramadhan season-break after an intense six rounds of almost back-to-back racing, there is still much left to fight for as no particular rider had emerged as the main contender in any of the open-make classes. The premiere CP130 class had yielded five winners out of six races so far, with Azlan Shah Kamaruzaman of team Harian Metro Y-TEQ SCK holding a slight advantage after managing one win and three other podium finishes which has added up to a total points collection of 100 points. Mathematically, the title is still up for grabs for any of the riders in the top five namely, Ahmad Fazrul Sham, Md Zaqhwan Zaidi, Ahmad Fuad Baharudin and defending champion Norizman Ismail. "Over the past few years, the level of competition in Cub Prix has been gaining momentum to the point that total domination by any one rider or team is now impossible," said Ron Hogg, Promotions Director of Safe Aim Mutual Sdn Bhd, the race promoters of the Malaysian Cub Prix. "There are several reasons for this. One particular reason which is very specific to this season is the number of new tracks that had been introduced into the calendar. So far, out of six rounds, three had been run on new track layouts that ensured an even playing field that balances out the advantages and disadvantages inherent between the bigger teams and the smaller start-ups." "However, more pertinent is the fact that the majority of the riders in the CP130 class are now classified as international riders. If in the past, riders taking part in international championships may only make up a small percentage of the total grid, this season, the total number of riders with international careers number up to 50% of the grid. Most feature in the Asia Road Racing Championship either in the SuperSports 600cc, the Underbone 115cc and the Asia Dream Cup classes. Even though Cub Prix races exclusively on underbone bikes, this level of exposure has done our Malaysian riders a world of good," Ron elaborated. This level of intensity is expected to continue when the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship picks up on where it left off in Round 7 which will be held in Kluang, Johor on September 22 to 23.
