PRIVATEER: 2011 SEASON REVIEW
13 January 2012

The 2011 season of the PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship was a great year for the Privateer category. Introduced in 2009, the class has grown to become a favourite among motorsports enthusiast with many more participants signing up, especially those from the northern region. We take a look back at the 2011 season.

The chase for the Privateer crown focused on Wazir Abdul Razak who proved to be a menacing force to win nine out of the ten rounds on the 2011 race calendar. The 27-year old kicked off his campaign on a strong note to ace the season opener in Kangar (Round 1) followed by back-to-back wins in Batu Kawan (Round 2), Terengganu (Round 3), Putrajaya (Round 4) and Teluk Intan (Round 5).

His attempt to create a double hat-trick however failed to materialize in Round 6 at Alor Setar where he finished 12th. Unaffected by his poor finish, Wazir went on to dominate the next two legs held in Kluang (Round 7) and Malacca (Round 8) where he successfully sealed the Privateer title. Although safely crowned Champion, that did not stop Wazir from winning the penultimate round in Sepang and the season finale at Penang Esplanade concluding the season with a massive 229 points.

Even so, Wazir did not go unchallenged with Mohd Fhahmin Abdul Mutalib constantly chasing his tail. Having made spot entries in the Privateer category in 2009, 2010, this season marks his strongest season to date, bagging three second finishes in Kangar (Round 1), Batu Kawan (Round 2), Teluk Intan (Round 5) before dominating the race in Alor Setar (Round 6) to end it with a chequered flag. His last race in the Privateer category however saw him DNF before moving up the ranks to compete in the CP115 category for PETRONAS Syntium Moto Yamaha Raceline but his consistent pace was enough for him to secure second overall position with 106 points despite skipping the remaining three rounds.

Another notable progress this season would be that of Ang Beng Seang. The sole Chinese rider in the Championship had a rough start in the first half of the season with a mixture of DNQ and DNF but from Round 6 onwards he started to show vast improvements. He finished Round 6 fourth place before securing four podium finishes back-to-back in the remaining four legs.
